ROLE's November issue out now!

Okay, this is it. Our 12th and final issue. Time for us to look back at what we have created and to say "Thank you!" to so many great people -- people who worked with us, became our friends, taught us many things and made our SL a richer and more interesting experience. Wow, there was a lot to learn about SL as platform on which to work and collaborate with people from different countries (and on many continents) and where to locate the many very talented folks scattered across the grid. Jura writes, "Piercing the sky above Second Life’s most northerly sim, stands a tower of light that began life as an artistic concept in the mind of a young, wild-eyed artist over forty years ago. The tower, named The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER, will be officially open on October 9, 2009 and will stand as a symbol for universal peace. October Issue of ROLE Magazine Out Now!

Help People® offers help and experience to sim visitors both new and old on any SL-related subject. Help People® volunteers assist an average of 900 new residents on their sim each day.

The ROLE Magazine & Help People® Institute affiliation will include twice monthly live musical performances on the Help People® sim, exclusive designer "new resident" packages and monthly articles written by Help People® volunteers as well as new residents as they navigate our virtual world.

Response to SCD: Yes, we should.

The following text is something we always tried to avoid. Since Tenshi Vielle decided to attack us no longer only on her plurk timeline but also on her Blog "Shopping Cart Disco", we decided to react.

It seems to be part of the SCD policy to use internal information and to publish IM logs. We never did that in the past even when Tenshi Vielle and her friends started the first attacks. It was our conviction that we keep personal issues on a private level and don't take them to the public and never to attack someone's business on the basis of personal differences.

But we will do it now.

Ofelia Laval is not only our closest friend on the grid but also an experienced team member and a wonderful person. We totally trust her and there is never a decision made without the three of us as a team. The decision not to feature Gattina Dumpling in our next issue was simply made because Gattina just blogged herself and her collaborative project Hotel Dare a few days ago on Shopping Cart Disco not simply because Gattina works for SCD. Gattina decided to go public with this topic before coming to us to clear this up. She went public and Tenshi Vielle jumped in her plurk for another attack to call us "bigot assholes". Gattina's first step should have been to clarify what she had heard with Ofelia Laval, Leeza Catteneo or me, Rohal Schnyder. We know Gattina as a former tenant and she was always a very nice person. We respect her engagement and her contributions in the arts community for SL and so does Ofelia Laval.

I admit that the following text is long but it will show you a different picture of the untruths Tenshi Vielle is trying to spread on her blog. It will show you a very different picture of a lot of things, too. We will not call anyone by an insulting name. We will just publish the straight facts. [Editor's note: references to RL facts are deleted with XXXXXXX]

1. "It started a few months ago when a friend was viciously cut from their staff (and their friends lists) and I called them out on it."

This is not true. It never happened. The friend Tenshi mentioned, is Felicity Blumenthal a former ROLE Magazine staff member and friend. She worked for us as a stylist and advertising consultant and moved over to Second Style due to her real life situation and because they offered her more money than we did. Felicity told us that she was in a real life situation where she thought this would help her. We didn't ask about the amount nor did we talk about money at all. We knew about her reasons when she decided to leave ROLE Magazine and we understood it. In internal IMs we thought there might be some communication issues but we all agreed that there were no issues between us and Felicity Blumenthal nor was she "viciously cut" from our staff. She left on good terms and of her own free will. Saying she was "viciously cut" is a straight out lie. Felicity is still on my friendslist. To paraphrase, if a photographer takes an in-world photo of an SL artist's build is it ethical for that photographer to set a price tag on the photograph and sell it as their art? July was a hectic month for the ROLE Magazine staff as we were chosen as an exhibitor for the SL6B Celebration which required a build to suit the futuristic theme. We celebrated the 6th birthday of Second Life in style with a live performance by the talented Winston Ackland and a photo contest for SL6b revelers.

We welcome new staff contributor Salvatore Otoro and anticipate his upcoming articles on role playing sims including his first in our magazine on the City of Lost Angels.

Our controversial on-going discussion of what makes art "art" continues with thoughts from Kee Llewellyn. Aldwyn Zanzibar unravels the mysteries behind three in-world pose tools and weighs in with his thoughts of the merits of each. Keeley Huet hops about the grid in search of the dearest prefab houses for our consideration. Paypabak Writer bowls us over with her in-depth look at the sixteen sim fantasy world of the Great Alliance.

As always, our fashion spreads are lush, exceptional and artfully inspired. ROLE Magazine - Hunting for Urban Music in SL

ROLE Magazine contributor Jura Shepherd is a well-known fixture of both the RL and in-world music scene. As a tireless promoter and supporter of musicians and their cause, Jura shares her observations on a noticeable hole in our music community.

"In a stylish Brooklyn brownstone on the Millions of Us sim, the intermittent stream of adult alternative music makes a listless attempt to break up the hush of utter inactivity. Promotional posters for Talib Kweli’s 2007 Warner Brothers CD release, “Ear Drum” adorn the walls like preserved relics of abandoned ambition that was to be Kweli’s foray into virtual worlds. The project had buzz, celebrity appeal, and a thoughtful build for showcasing live performances in-world but with a current day traffic rating of seven, it points to the greater question of why urban music has yet to capture audiences within Second Life.

To be fair, major label music acts have yet to utilize SL in a meaningful way and there’s also the fact that urban music isn’t the real world juggernaut that it was three years ago. Even so, at any given time roughly twenty percent of iTunes sales are songs classified as Hip-Hop /Rap. Look at ranking charts for terrestrial radio and you’ll see similar numbers so why is the genre so under-represented in SL’s live music community?"

ROLE Magazine contributor Aldwyn Zanzibar is a man of many talents and interests. With his monthly ROLE Magazine column on gadgets and electronics Al has covered many relevant topics for SL residents. In our current issue, Al demystifies client camera controls and provides tips for those of you wanting to start snapping pictures in-world.

"Growing up, I loved photography. I played with cameras all the time. Unfortunately, the cost to develop pictures was more than my allowance could bear, so I was limited in how many photos I could take. Also, I got a bit tired of always carrying a camera around, because they were NOT small back then. Always having to be careful with it, making sure I didn’t lose it, was more of a pain then a joy. That was when I stopped doing a lot of photography. Even with the digital cameras out now, I still find myself not wanting to carry a good camera around all the time. Art in Second Life® has been sometimes controversial. Comments in Flickr or Koinup, discussions in forums and blog posts. This controversy is related to SL-photography, possibly because photography (as a technique) has sometimes been questioned as art in history. All of these discussions have generated more questions than answers: "What is art in Second Life? Who makes art in Second Life? Is the tool that which defines the art? Who is an artist?"

ROLE Magazine is proud to announce our second art installment featuring works from the gifted Bryn Oh, Feathers Boa and talented musician BlindBoy Gumbo, March 14th at 12pm SLT at ROLE Magazine HQ on Concetta.

Bryn Oh, a Toronto artist and painter, is known in SL for her steampunk features and doesn’t need much of an introduction. Her works are described as artifacts from an alternative future. “When I paint in real life I use large canvases to block out the peripheral vision and allow the viewer to come into the painting and become more immersed, but Second Life is absolutely immersive. It is being inside a painting”

Feathers Boa, a young, talented artist, has established an impressive body of work that includes fully-immersive pieces, interactive digital “paintings,” giant robots, aesthetically innovative avatars and full architectural builds. Feathers built the art school on New Caerleon which she co-directs with Bryn Oh.

BlindBoy Gumbo, known real life as Lee Gibson, cannot deny his affection and loyalty to the musical hedgehogs which raised him. This talented musician will perform live at the exhibition with his acoustic slide guitar.

ROLE Magazine is a monthly publication available both in-world and online. Our online format uses the Issuu – You Publish platform which provides detailed data on the number of times a single publication was read. In the meantime, we have begun posting our readership data on the ROLE Magazine website and we commit to updating our data regularly.

Business owners have expressed their frustrations in accessing verifiable readership information from in-world publications. Online readership numbers are easy to prove but the in-world readership numbers are nearly impossible to substantiate. How can an advertiser be sure that an in-world magazine, featuring their double-page ad, and delivered through an automated system (such as Subscribe-O-Matic) will be read or even opened? The same question is raised every time a magazine kiosk is clicked and that click is counted as a reader. There is no way to know that a magazine delivered in-world was actually read. Furthermore, it is far too easy to artificially inflate in-world readership statistics by clicking multiple times on a magazine kiosk.

Are you interested in joining the dynamic team which is currently producing one of the best magazines on the grid? ROLE Magazine is now accepting applications for a staff writer for our monthly in-world publication.

ROLE Magazine focuses on all aspects of the SL experience. Our content includes in-world art, fashion, current events, literature, music, etc. We are currently seeking a writer with experience and knowledge in almost any area of interest.

Candidates must possess strong English language skills. Additional qualities we seek are: self-motivation, the ability to work successfully within a team environment, the ability to research and write an article on any assigned topic under deadline with professionalism and reliability.

Interested candidates should submit a writing sample on any topic (200-300 words) to: apply@role-magazine.com on or before December 31st. Include with your sample your in-world name, avatar age and, if applicable, your specific area of interest and relevant experience. Applications without a writing sample will not be considered.

These sculpted shades are inspired by the very popular Wayfarer sunglasses, as worn by Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd) in the Blues Brothers movie. The good news is: They are coming back in style! Latest Glasses & New Features

After a strenuous session of updating and rewriting the scripts we are proud to present you our latest glasses called REACT.

Now you will find a TEXTUR button in the menu to change the texture style of the frame. We added black, white, dark camouflage and bright camouflage.

Another new and cool feature is the POSITION button in the menu where you have the possibility to move your glasses up ON HEAD or back ON NOSE with just a click.

To make the whole thing cooler we added an animation that makes your avatar look like moving the glasses with a hand :D You can set this animation ON / OFF.

We added this feature to ALL our glasses at our Mainstore, too! :)

Introducing ROLE OPTIC

ROLE OPTIC is formerly known as EYEWEAR.

ROLE OPTIC is Rohal Schnyder and Leeza Catteneo.

Rohal Schnyder founded EYEWEAR as a brand for scripted prim glasses & shades in Second Life one year ago. Some month later Leeza Catteneo joined EYEWEAR and brought in some new ideas. In this time we got to know for taking care of the needs of every single customers.

We manufacture prim and sculpted sunglasses which can be variously and simply modified with a menu by the customers. This is possible by a well developed script that allows you to adjust the glasses in many ways to create your own and very individual look.

Starting this blog is a summer breeze for our brand and we hope you will like it too!
